Born in Colwyn Bay, Denbighshire,〔England and Wales Census Return, 1911〕 he was brought up in Swansea〔England and Wales Census Return, 1911〕 and educated at Swansea Grammar School. He was a scholar of Jesus College, Oxford, where he read Classics, and he later took at external degree (with 1st class honours) at London University.
